The nonglycolytic, anaerobic organism Veillonella parvula M4 has been shown to contain an active pyruvate kinase. The enzyme was purified 126-fold and was shown by disc-gel electrophoresis to contain only two faint contaminating bands.

In humans they have been implicated in cases of osteomyelitis and endocarditis, for example with the species Veillonella parvula. A strain of Veillonella parvula M4, which grows readily in lactate broth without a requirement for carbon dioxide, has been isolated from the oral cavity.
