In 1931, Shute married Frances Mary Heaton and in the same year founded an aircraft construction company, Airspeed Ltd., which became a major airplane manufacturer in Britain by the end of the decade. Nevil Shute (1899-1960) was an English novelist and aeronautical engineer who served in the British military in both world wars and spent his later years in Australia.

Neville Shute's novel is about two men who met as impoverished teenagers and subsequently worked together in the Middle East in the 1950's.The protagonist is building up a commercial airline and the other is his skilled mechanic.The mechanic begins to teach his fellow workers that to be a good mechanic one must also be a good person.He is so persuasive that he becomes a cult figure.
