The MiG-15’s first flight was in December of 1947, a mere two months after Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in his X-1, so aircraft designers were still learning a lot about how hot metal slides through air at the speed of Mach, but they sure knew how to make fine-looking aircraft. The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 (NATO code name: “fagot”) was a 1950s Soviet fighter.

Like the MiG-15 “Fagot” (NATO reporting name), the new design was to be a lightweight, simple and reliable machine that would continue the tradition of the “samolyot-soldaht” (“soldier aircraft”). While using much of the MiG-15’s structure, the new design sought to remedy some of its shortcomings. The Sukhoi Su-15, NATO codename “Flagon,” was a high-speed interceptor dedicated to guarding the long borders of the Soviet Union from nuclear bombers, cruise missiles and snooping spy planes. Unlike the famous MiG-21 or Su-27, the Su-15 served exclusively in 29 regiments of the Soviet PVO Air Defense Force and was never exported abroad. The prototype of the MiG-15 (NATO code name "Fagot") made its maiden flight on 30 December 1947.

Fagot is a code name by NATO. There is some dirty area of the canopy, but it seems clear inside that the sealed and glued was successful. The total production of MiG-15 is said from 15,000 to 18,000, and it was operated in the former communist region and a country closely related to the Soviet Union, used many countries around the world.

The MiG-9 was a troublesome design which suffered from weak, unreliable engines and control problems. The MiG-15 was first flown end 1947, it soon was used in the Korean War against Western armed forces, fighting against also American F-86 Sabres. The jet air combat was born in which the MiG-15 got NATO code name "Fagot" proved to be very manoevrable with a great rate of climb. The MiG-15 was actually significantly smaller than the F-86, with only about 80% of the empty weight, though it tended to look bigger because its fuselage was relatively plump, as dictated by its VK-1 centrifugal flow engine. The slender Sabre arguably had the edge in sheer good looks, but the MiG-15 had an admirable warlike style of its own.
